John Cavanaugh is an attorney and former assistant public defender elected to the nonpartisan Nebraska Legislature from District 9 in 2020. He is the son of former U.S. Rep. John J. Cavanaugh III, who represented Nebraska's 2nd District from 1977 to 1981. Cavanaugh ran for the same seat in 2026 and lost the Democratic primary to Denise Powell. [State Sen.
