Michael Whatley is a Republican political operative who chaired the North Carolina Republican Party (2019-2024) and then served as Chair of the Republican National Committee from 2024 until 2025. Earlier in his career he worked on George W. Bush's 2000 campaign, served as a deputy assistant secretary at the Department of Energy, and was chief of staff to U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole. With President Trump's backing, he announced his U.S. Senate candidacy in July 2025, advanced from the March 3, 2026 Republican primary, and is the Republican nominee in the November 3, 2026 general election against Democrat Roy Cooper.
