Nirav D. Shah is a physician, attorney, and epidemiologist who directed the Maine CDC from 2019 to 2023, leading the state's COVID-19 response, before serving as Principal Deputy Director of the U.S. CDC in the Biden administration from 2023 to 2025. He holds law and medicine degrees from the University of Chicago. In June 2026 he finished second in Maine's Democratic gubernatorial primary, and on July 9, 2026 he entered the U.S. Senate race as a Democrat seeking to unseat Republican Sen.
