Roy Cooper is a Democratic politician who served as the 75th Governor of North Carolina from 2017 to 2025, after nearly 16 years as North Carolina Attorney General (2001-2017) and earlier service in the state legislature. Term-limited as governor, he announced his U.S. Senate candidacy in July 2025 to run for the open seat being vacated by retiring Republican Thom Tillis.
