John E. Sununu is a Republican former U.S. Senator from New Hampshire who served one term from 2003 to 2009, after representing New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House from 1997 to 2003. He won his Senate seat by defeating then-Governor Jeanne Shaheen in 2002 and lost a 2008 rematch to her; he is a member of the Sununu political family, son of former Governor and White House Chief of Staff John H. Sununu and brother of former Governor Chris Sununu. In October 2025 he announced a campaign to return to the U.S. Senate for the open seat created by Shaheen's retirement, running in the Republican primary scheduled for September 8, 2026. [John E.
